I usually don’t wait for ideal conditions to ditch the four wheeler and hop on an actual dog sled. This year was no different. If there’s four or more inches of decent snow at the trail head, I go for it. I waited until Nov. 12, which is a little later than usual. But the conditions up in the Caribou Hills wound up being much better than they have been in the past. Every season has it’s own personality. This one arrived late, but with better snow cover.
Every musher keeps some kind of tally listing their dogs and the miles they’ve run, maybe with a few extra notes about which ones are doing well and which aren’t. These systems range from elaborate commercial software to pencil scratchings on a stained yellow legal pad.
